Disappointed. I had hoped it would contain all the flowers in the list at the end of The Language of Flowers.It only contains 50 out of the couple of hundred in Diffenbaugh's list.
I was very disappointed in the floral illustrations in this book. They must have been done by a different artist than the cover artist. While the cover illustration is a lovely botanical rendering, the illustrations in the book are very basic and elementary. As an artist, I was disappointed. The text is interesting, however.
Such a nice little book. Strange that they wanted so much for it originally, but I got it for a more reasonable price in the end. It is very informative with lots of nice drawings of the flowers. It arrived on time and in perfect condition.
Such a great reference book for flower arranging/gift giving! I'm very excited to use this for handing out bouquets gifts to friends w/ special meaning! This book is pretty small and most definitely fits in my purse; I love it because I can take it with me everywhere--like the florist! However, I'm unsure if this contains every flora that exist, but for a starter's guide, this does an excellent job!
A beautiful little hard cover book with illustrations of fifty flowers and over fifty meanings. It describes the history behind the meaning of each illustrated flower along with a piece of poetry. It also contains guides to purposeful flower arrangements. This is a beautiful gift for gardeners, florists and romantics a like! I bought it for myself as I enjoy gardening and have an appreciation for the Victorian Era. I could not be more pleased! I keep it displayed in my home surrounded by indoor plants.
This is a lovely little book. However, I wanted more pictures of more flowers. I also would like a few more definitions.
i was looking for a book that would give a detailed description of what a flower/plant meant. I was delighted to see that it was just that, and even gave a beautiful drawn image of the flower i was reading about. not to mention in the end of the book it had a small dictionary of flowers (not all in the book) with a or a few words of a description. If your looking for some information on plants to get you started i would definitely recommend this.
A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby and Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a wonderful companion to Diffenbaugh's novel, The Language of Flowers. Beginning with a few introductory pages Diffenbaugh writes that, "In every culture throughout time, flowers have been central to the human experience." The book is arranges in alpha order from anemone to weeping willow and illustrates in simple two color illustration the flower that is being defined and explored. There are fifty flowers highlighted and the information and poetry is descriptive. As Diffenbaugh explains, this book was designed as a relevant dictionary for the modern reader and it serves that function well. If you are a lover of flowers and exploring their history and meanings, this would be a good addition to your library. Happy reading and gardening
