This book focuses on learning to hear harmonic progressions. You should first know how to read music and probably already have some basic ear training--enough to transcribe a simple melody. A semester of music theory, for example, should be plenty. There's no magic bullet here; this is just a guide to the necessary hours of practice. But the framework she provides is clear and sensible. The text is well-written, and the book's well laid out and easy to use. The accompanying audio examples are also high quality. Also, she suggests recordings to use as practice material, and gathers the suggestions into a discography at the end. The choices are well thought-out: they stand up to repeated listening; they're at appropriate levels of difficulty; they're mostly easy to find, and many will be familiar (which helps give the feeling of learning names for things you've heard before).I've made it about halfway through, and I'm having fun and learning a lot. Highly recommended. You'll also want a notebook with some manuscript paper, some comfortable headphones, an instrument to try stuff on, and access to a good music library (I've been using Google's subscription service plus CD's for occasional exceptions (mainly Beatles songs)). This isn't something to read passively. It would also be better with a teacher or at least some fellow students to work with, but I'm finding it useful enough on my own.

Not a book for beginners. A reader needs to be able to read music notation and have access to an App or instrument that can play the bass clef notes as this is where the third activity in Chp 1 "Hearing the Base Line" begins. Activity #4 on page 4 a reader is asked to sing the root motion of the chord progression from the lead sheet. By Activity #6, Chp 1. the exercise is to write, play and sing through 6 of the major scales in the bass clef which the author acknowledges will be a review i.e from one's previous music experience, not included in this book. So yes, it may be "real easy" after a couple of years of playing/studying a musical instrument. However, if you plan to study this book by yourself, my advice is to make sure you know your music basics before purchasing it.

This book has a lot crammed into it. Radley is a master at teaching this difficult subject. She provides a clear step-by-step approach that involves listening exercises and examples from popular music. The audio examples are well done. They are easy to hear and involve a variety of instrument sounds.Radley teaches this course at berkleemusic.com. It has been the best course I have taken anywhere in any subject in any academic setting. The course follows the topics in the book. If you can take the course, it's well worth it, and be prepared to work hard. If you can't take the course, then enjoy this excellent book. The more active you are about doing the exercises, the more you'll get out of it.

I've been playing guitar off and on for over 15 years and i purchased this to enhance my playing. I purchased this book overa year ago and i have definitely noticed that i hear nuances in chords and progressions in a way that i've overlooked in the past.I believe this book would definitely aide beginner musicians learning the diatonic scale and music theory. It really didhelp me internalize the sound of intervals, triads and root motion in a new way. Radley uses examples from a wide range of music genres as well as artists (e.g. Hendirx, Hootie & the Blowfish, Al Jarreau, etc.) so it's not a stuffy boring book. I found some of the initial examples require an instrument that can hit some low bass notes; I used guitar, bass and an Ipad piano app to work through the book. My Ipad app instrument was my favorite to work with since i could use headphones and voice the notes much clearer while practicing.I think it's a well written book and methodology written by a well known professor at Berklee College of Music, and a greatvalue considering what you would have to pay in tuition costs to take this course at Berklee. It might be a little challenging for beginning musicians, but definitely worth the effort. This book won't magically makeyou ear trained once you completed it, but you will have improved in some way. And I agree with one of the other reviewers that stated, "you'll get out of it what you put in."

This is a very practical book, both clear and detailed. It starts simply, but then covers a lot of ground. There are always plenty of examples of the points taught with a list of tracks to listen to, so that everything feels relevant and never simply academic. As another reviewer said, you'll get as much out of this book as you are prepared to put in. You could spend a lot of time on each lesson and continue to improve. If you take it seriously, your aural abilities will definitely improve in some way.I like this book so much, my only regret is that I bought the kindle version, downloading the music free from the publishers. While I can enlarge the print, musical notation remains small and faint, quite difficult to read. I'd recommend getting a hard copy.

Well written book. Good examples. Hard as heck to learn but that's me. I'm no prodigy. If you feel that way too, you are not alone. Hang in there. It's already helping my music after only a few weeks and a dozen pages.I ripped the practice CDs to MP3s which made practices easier with my setup. Much easier to start, stop, and loop the tracks, which I have to do a lot. I put them on my phone so I can practice in traffic.

I've done, or should I say attempted, ear training for quite some time. With the help of this book I can tell you I'm sticking with it and applying useful ideas in my daily practice. Can I walk down the street and identify a major 6th? Not yet but yesterday I heard some noise, heard it as a major second and resolved it to a tonic in my mind. That's something.
